I consider myself a photographer as well as a bookmaker. The art of photography has led me to the craft of bookmaking. I most recently started calling myself a fine craft artist. Going through school, fine arts and crafts were segregated in my learning, but I believe them to be completely related within my own work as I ended up minoring in textile crafts.
The craft of book-arts is an ancient art form that I believe to be dying with eBooks. To me nothing compares to a hardbound book with pages. I am inspired by the precision of the craft and traditional processes, but also greatly influenced by experimental techniques and materials. When it comes to my photography, I prefer working in film, and even sticking to darkroom techniques while working digitally in Photoshop. When I finish a photobook, I’ve made a piece of art that someone can hold and feel, just as I’ve put my own hands into the making of a book.
I like to work with elements of nature as well as different relationships with human beings in a surreal way. I’ve always been fascinated with trying to capture movement within my photography instead of trying to rigidly “stop time.” I think this directly correlates to making books. Since my photography is in a book format it’s only natural that it becomes a story when you move from page to page, but that is not always my intention. Sometimes my story is just a theme, not having a beginning, middle, or an end; the ultimate story is your own conclusion
